The right expectations are important. Only in this way can misunderstandings and disappointments be prevented or at least kept to a minimum. This applies to both sides, but almost more so to the employer, from the management to the nursing service management to the direct colleagues in the team. Support, understanding and, at the same time, positive motivation, encouragement and even challenge. This is not easy and also depends heavily on how the new team member presents themselves. One thing is for sure: the new team member is someone who has a lot of experience, sometimes even a lot of medical and technical knowledge. Someone who does not know basic nursing from training and previous professional life and almost always still has to finish the process of professional recognition, be it a preparatory course for the professional exam or an adaptation course. All this in addition to the job, transitionally as an assistant nurse, maybe even language courses and settling into the new life.
What do foreign nurses associate with starting their career in Germany? What do they hope for and take for granted? What on the other hand can employers expect? Sure, a better standard of living through a higher income. Better working and certainly also living conditions, that brings many to the decision to leave their home country and thus their familiar surroundings. It is important to put the understandable and often comprehensible expectations into the right context and, if necessary, to put them into perspective in order to prevent disappointment. Certainly, one earns more, but also has significantly higher costs. Nursing work is demanding, also in Germany. Fair pay should be a matter of course, as well as time and patience for extensive familiarization and, as far as possible, support with integration, which can also mean, for example, pointing out the sense of liability insurance or finding a place in a daycare center.
