Foreign nurses, what does it mean?
Every nurse is different. Obviously. And besides differences in their cultural background, mentality and personality, there are amongst the various countries also differences in their professional education, the understanding of the nursing profession and the perception of the individual role in their working context.
Discrepancies to the German profession as a nurse can be found in the rather theoretical approach of the university degree of nursing in other countries. Foreign nurses tend to have a more medical expertise, more specialist knowledge and are used to work more autonomously assist doctors.
Foreign nurses mostly work in hospitals which as well differ greatly from the hospitals we know in Germany. Also, rehabilitation clinics or elderly care homes are not that common in other countries. Basic care and practical support of patients is often less typical as this is usually done by the patient’s family. It is therefore recommended to inform the new employees about habits and standards in Germany at an early stage, so they will gain an understanding of the German view on the nursing profession and adapt to it smoothly.
