According to the Federal Statistical Office, the number of new nursing trainees in 2024 increased by nine percent or 5,100 to around 59,500 across Germany compared to the previous year.

However, the number of trainees in nursing has not changed across all three current training years: 147,100 people in 2024, and thus around 200 more than in 2023. There are now slightly more men entering the nursing profession. However, with a share of 76 per cent, the profession is still clearly dominated by women.

According to Destatis, data on care students in bachelor’s degree programms at universities will be available for the first time in 2024. According to this data, around 1,200 students were enrolled in a care degree programm at the end of 2024, with around 700 of them being first-year students.
