Patient advocates and nursing associations in Germany have expressed alarm at the increasing shortage of staff in nursing homes.

Christine Vogler, President of the German Nursing Council, emphasised: ‘In many places, nursing care in Germany is no longer guaranteed’.  In inpatient long-term care alone, there is a shortage of around 115,000 full-time professional carers. At the same time, the number of people in need of care in Germany is continuing to rise, which is further exacerbating the situation.

We need to invest in education and structures, improve working conditions, and reduce digitalisation and bureaucracy. At the same time, we must continue to rely on foreign care workers. The work in geriatric care has become very attractive in the recent past due to a sharp increase in salaries.
